What does Digital Video (DV) Really Mean in Minneapolis, Minnesota?
Digital Video here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is interpreted broadly. It ranges from higher line high definition video, all the way down to Uncle Al in Minnesota with his home video camera. There are gray areas in the "definition" of high def video. While Minnesota clients call me asking for footage in high def video, I ask a few more questions. While people in Minneapolis and Minnesota in general are quite savvy regarding media, I need to know whether they mean DV or HDV-or high definition shot on cameras that cost between $50,000 and $100,000.
I've found digital to be a confusing term. Minneapolis, Minnesota clients have asked me since the initial hype of "are you digital?". The camera I've used for the last seven years is an analog recording camera (Beta SP) that makes a digital picture within the camera. This Sony D600 has been the "coke classic", but is starting to fade away gradually. While some Minneapolis, Minnesota producers have sounded disappointed when they hear this camera is not pure digital, its picture still rivals many of its counterparts, especially the DV cam.
Many producers coming to Minneapolis, Minnesota these days request cameras that shoot video in 24p. This is one of the most important developments in production recently. Cameras like the Panasonic SDX-900 make amazing pictures, and I can give my clients the same rates for this camera as the Sony D600.
Generally, I don't work in the DV or HDV realm, but those cameras are producing better and better video. Larger format cameras not only handle better, but have larger chips that produce more saturated images in DV. They also hold up better in Minneapolis, Minnesota winters.
Minneapolis, Minnesota video producers, as well as producers who visit Minneapolis and Minnesota, seem to appreciate the subtle look 24p provides at a reasonable cost.
